When I say 5 stars, I don't mean compared to a $200 processor. I'm comparing it to the handful of other food processors I've worn through near this price point. This machine, in my mind, sets the gold standard for this let's say class of food processors.That said, this thing is a real workhorse. We use it primarily for shredding cheese, usually full pounds of mozzarella at a time but sometimes harder cheeses, and it does so beautifully. We've used it to shred some other things and it's done fine, but I think it's safe to say that the real test of any processor is cheese and I can tell you unequivocally this processor shreds cheese with no problem. If anybody has an issue with parts breaking I can only guess maybe they're forcing it? I finally had the guts to make bread dough in it, it worked great, even while it was "kneading" the heavy, sticky dough for 1 minute it didn't get too hot or slow down! The safety features are... well... they certainly just ARE. So, I'd definitely say this is a good machine, just fine for basic food prep. OXO's very versatile V-Blade Mandoline slices fruits and vegetables with ease. Four blades and a simple height adjuster make straight slices, crinkle cuts, French fries and julienne strips in a variety of thicknesses. The blades store on board and are easily removable for cleaning. A textured surface keeps food from sticking to the Mandoline and the food holder securely holds food and protects fingers. The handle and turning knob are soft for comfort and non-slip feet keep the Mandoline secure on the work surface. Fold the feet and lock the Mandoline for compact and safe storage. The Borner V-slicer fulfills this need, but it can make only 2 thickness slices. I liked the idea of the adjustable slice thickness of the OXO, but it seems to be of little practical value. Changing the julienne blades on the Borner is very fast and eash, but on the OXO, it is much more difficult and I feel that I'm in danger of cutting myself while I'm doing it. Features they liked:- 'V' blade gets high marks: Models tested had straight blades (bad), or diagonal blades (better), or 'V' blades (best). All could slice hard things like potatoes & carrots, but only those with a 'V' blade could slice a tomato without destroying it. - Pusher handle keeps your fingers away from the blade - Slice thickness easy to adjust. - Comes with 3 blades that conveniently store in the bottom of the unit. - Good value for the price.
